The stories and proverbs in this book are okay, certainly not scintillating, but then how scintillating can content written for beginning language learners be. The problem is that the Kindle edition is very difficult to navigate. Instead of having the English immediately after each selection, the Spanish breaks off in the middle of stories, frequently in the middle of sentences, in order to give the English translation of material that preceded the selection in question and up to the point at which the selection in question was interrupted; then the English breaks off and the Spanish recommences for a time, only to break off in the middle of a thought again somewhere further on. If you would like to read an entire Spanish story at once, as I would, the only possible way to do that is to page past gobs of English to get to the rest of what you've been reading, page back again to read the first part of the translation and then forward again to read the rest of the translation. It is highly annoying and makes the book virtually useless. I can't imagine why anyone would choose such an awkward arrangement. I can only guess that someone decided that it was too much trouble to format the Kindle version in a way that would make it usable. I'm still deciding whether I'll return it.

I really enjoyed the stories in this book. While a few were familiar fables, there also were some very unusual stories with different twists for endings. I especially enjoyed Por Qué Muchas Personas No Figuran en el Censo, a hilarious story about a poor census taker trying to get a straight answer from a chatty housewife. The last story about a train station guard revealing the deceptive nature of traveling by trains to a hapless traveler could be the basis for a Stephen King novel. I felt more comfortable with the Spanish as I worked my way through the book and I think it has definitely helped my vocabulary. For words I didn't know, I either used the Kindle built-in dictionary (with definitions in Spanish, so not always helpful) or the Kindle translation, but then I was able to scan over the English translation every few paragraphs to make sure I had understood correctly or to get myself back on track if I was completely confused. Unlike some dual-language books, the English translations in this book were excellent. I will definitely order the next book in this series.

Do not order the kindle version if you want to read side by side. It is ridiculous that they sell a Kindle version that defeats the whole purpose of the book - which is side by side reading in English. The stories are good, sure. But scrolling two pages on the Kindle to get to the English version is a very bad user experience.

Don't like the idea it says this book is for the beginner reader. The preface says the beginner should have a few intensive lessons in the Spanish language. It would take more then a few courses to understand the readings. You would need quite a vocabulary to understand the stories. I plan to keep the book and maybe in a few years of studying the language, maybe at that point I will be able to understand some of the stories.

This book offers a good amount of challenge. when you begin reading the book and open it up, you find the left side pages are written in español and the right right side is written in english. Its nice that if you get lost or encounter a new word you simply look to the right side and find the translation of the prase or the word. I am considering highlighting through the book as i go. so that at a later time i could have quick reference or write the words out to flash cards for easier memorization. Also near the back of the book there are quizes, and short dictionary that has many of the "stuck" words you encounter.this book is very inexpensive and offers alot. The stories are good old stories that have a moral to the story. Also its something different it takes your mind off of learning and lets it happen without thinking about it, while you fixate on the story. i like the book alot and for 2.50 i cant see how anyone could pass up. I think anyone reading this review should atleast try it out, the worst case you will be out a few bucks.i would say its intermediate level.Good luck

Note* I didn't know ANY Spanish before this bookUpon finishing it I've found myself happily surprised that I can read some Spanish and understand at least general meaning of simple texts! and that's with 0 previous knowledge!I didn't even feel like I was studying - just reading cute short stories.I have to add that I also purchased a couple of phrase books and 101 vocabularies that I was reading at the same time. So in conjunction with other materials these simple bilingual books are priceless - better then any other long and boring educational programs. And the best part you get a good feeling of how the sentences are built and tenses are used. Instead of trying to pound rules and grammar into your head in the beginning I think it's better to start with just reading a few books like these.

I bought this book years ago, but I have just started studying it seriously over the last month. The book is well organised. The stories are simplified, without being dumbed down, so they they remain interesting. The grammar gets progressively harder as one progresses through the book, I am beginning to understand more clearly how to use different tenses. I wish we had used this book when I was in secondary school.Very enjoyable book.

These "parallel" readers are a great asset to an intermediate student. One gets to read beautiful stories, and "learn" about them both in the native language and in translation. Highly recommended as a learning tool, and for the sheer pleasure of reading great stories.
